A little help

Adopting, fostering, or rehoming a senior pet

Why adopt a senior pet

Older dogs and cats are often calmer, already house-trained, and past the chewing-everything stage. Many shelters and rescues run senior-specific programs — ask about reduced adoption fees, foster-to-adopt options, and any medical support they provide.

Need help rehoming a pet?

Reach out early and be honest about your situation. Many organizations offer surrender or rehoming support, keep waitlists, or can offer advice even when they’re full. The “Rehoming help” filter is a good place to start — and please never abandon a pet.

Shelter or rescue?

Shelters are usually physical facilities, often run by a city or a humane society. Rescues are frequently foster-based nonprofits, sometimes focused on a breed or on seniors. Both can help you adopt — the labels here are search hints, not verified classifications.

Before you visit

Call ahead to confirm hours and ask about adoption requirements, fees, and whether a meet-and-greet is possible. If a group is full, they may partner with other rescues — it’s always worth asking.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

How does this shelter and rescue directory work?

Choose a type of organization and a location (state and city, or a ZIP code), and we search Google for nearby animal shelters and rescues. You can see each organization’s Google rating, reviews, hours, phone number, and directions, then contact them directly to adopt, foster, or ask for help.

Are these organizations recommended or verified by Lily’s Second Chance?

No. We do not endorse, verify, or have any affiliation with the organizations listed. Information comes from Google and is provided for convenience. The organization-type labels (shelter, rescue, no-kill, and so on) are search suggestions, not confirmed or verified descriptions — always contact the organization directly to confirm.

How do I adopt a senior dog or cat from a shelter or rescue?

Use the “Senior dog rescue” filter or search your local shelters and humane societies, then contact them about senior pets currently available, their adoption requirements and fees, and whether you can arrange a meet-and-greet. Many rescues are foster-based, so a senior pet may be living in a foster home rather than a facility.

I need help rehoming my pet — what should I do?

Reach out early. Many shelters and rescues offer rehoming or surrender support, and some keep waitlists or can share advice even if they are full. Try the “Rehoming help” or “Humane society” filters and call to ask about your options. Please never abandon a pet — local organizations would much rather help you find a safe path.

What’s the difference between a shelter and a rescue?

Shelters are usually physical facilities — often run by a city/municipality or a humane society — where animals are housed and adopted out. Rescues are frequently nonprofit, foster-based groups, sometimes focused on a specific breed or on senior pets. Both can help you adopt; the labels in this directory are search hints only, not verified classifications.

Where do the ratings and reviews come from?

Ratings, reviews, hours, and contact details are provided by Google. They may be out of date, so we always link to Google Maps for the latest information and recommend confirming directly with the organization.

Do you store my searches or personal information?

We keep only coarse, anonymous information about which areas (state, city, and a ZIP region) and organization types are searched, to understand where senior pets need more resources. We never store your full ZIP code, your search keywords, or any personal or rehoming details. See our privacy notice for more.
