Meet Phoenix

Meet Phoenix! Phoenix is a lovely American Pit Bull Terrier girl. She is around 7 years old and is looking for a home where she can go into early retirement! While she's only middle-aged (for a pit bull) and has lots of life left to live, she'd prefer somewhere where her responsibilities are next-to-nothing. Somewhere she can hang out and be waited on like diva that she is! Phoenix knows when breakfast and dinner times are and tries REALLY hard to convince everyone that she got skipped at feeding time. If things were her way, she'd have breakfast, lunch, dinner and maybe a few snacks in between! She's not a super active dog, but does enjoy a short walk. Unless, of course, it is too close to feeding time. Then she limits her walk time to pottying only—no extra steps please. Phoenix is extremely food motivated so one way to coax her into a walk is by using food to encourage her. If you are looking for a hungry little hippo bestie, please apply for Phoenix! She would do best in a calm home as the only dog. Apply now!

Adopting Phoenix — FAQ

How do I adopt Phoenix?

Use the adoption link or contact details on this page to apply directly with Friends of Mountainair Animal Shelter (FOMAS) in Mountainair, New Mexico. Lily's Second Chance lists Phoenix to help them get seen — the adoption is handled by that organization.

Is Phoenix still available for adoption?

Phoenix's listing is refreshed regularly, but availability can change quickly as dogs are adopted. Always confirm Phoenix is still available directly with Friends of Mountainair Animal Shelter (FOMAS) before making plans.

Is Phoenix a senior dog?

Yes. Every dog listed on Lily's Second Chance, including Phoenix, is a senior — generally age 7 or older. Senior dogs are often already house-trained and calm, and they wait the longest for a home.

Can I foster Phoenix instead of adopting?

Some shelters and rescues offer a foster-to-adopt path — you foster first, then complete the adoption if the match feels right. Check Phoenix's profile for the organization's contact details and ask them directly whether a fostering option is available.

What should I expect in the first weeks after adopting Phoenix?

Senior dogs typically have a brief adjustment period of a few days to a couple of weeks as they settle into a new home. They may be quiet or shy at first, then relax once they feel safe. A calm routine, a comfortable place to sleep, and patience usually make the transition smooth. Most senior dogs settle in faster than puppies because they are already past the demanding early stage.

Is Phoenix good with children or other pets?

Compatibility depends on the individual dog's history and personality more than age or breed alone. Friends of Mountainair Animal Shelter (FOMAS) can tell you about Phoenix's known behavior around children, cats, and other dogs. Many organizations offer a meet-and-greet before finalizing an adoption to make sure the match is right for everyone.
