Meet Hippo

Meet Hippo! This is a 5 year old female, North American house hippo...seeking a house! Hippo is a wonderfully spirited and friendly girl, and her name certainly suits her as she is a short and squat little thing with a mighty powerful personality! Hippo loves people, almost as much as she loves playing fetch! She may be on the shorter side, but she's still a strong girl at around 55-60 pounds and can pull quite hard on a leash. She enjoys walks and we know that with a little training she will start to ease up on her leash pulling! Hippo seems to be dog friendly, but is perhaps most interested in hanging with fun people that like to play with her! She is not a match in a home with cats and has not perfected her dog to dog manners well enough yet to live easily with another dog. Hippo's adoption fee is $250 and includes her spay, microchip, current vaccines and monthly preventatives plus a free basic training class at Cedar Run Company in Hiawatha. If you would like to meet Hippo, please submit an adoption application on our website (Adopthope.org). Our adoption process includes a vet history check and a home visit, we do require that adopters have a history of having kept all animals as indoor pets only, altered and kept current on vaccines and preventatives.

Adopting Hippo — FAQ

How do I adopt Hippo?

Use the adoption link or contact details on this page to apply directly with Last Hope Animal Rescue in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Lily's Second Chance lists Hippo to help them get seen — the adoption is handled by that organization.

Is Hippo still available for adoption?

Hippo's listing is refreshed regularly, but availability can change quickly as dogs are adopted. Always confirm Hippo is still available directly with Last Hope Animal Rescue before making plans.

Is Hippo a senior dog?

Yes. Every dog listed on Lily's Second Chance, including Hippo, is a senior — generally age 7 or older. Senior dogs are often already house-trained and calm, and they wait the longest for a home.

Can I foster Hippo instead of adopting?

Some shelters and rescues offer a foster-to-adopt path — you foster first, then complete the adoption if the match feels right. Check Hippo's profile for the organization's contact details and ask them directly whether a fostering option is available.

What should I expect in the first weeks after adopting Hippo?

Senior dogs typically have a brief adjustment period of a few days to a couple of weeks as they settle into a new home. They may be quiet or shy at first, then relax once they feel safe. A calm routine, a comfortable place to sleep, and patience usually make the transition smooth. Most senior dogs settle in faster than puppies because they are already past the demanding early stage.

Is Hippo good with children or other pets?

Compatibility depends on the individual dog's history and personality more than age or breed alone. Last Hope Animal Rescue can tell you about Hippo's known behavior around children, cats, and other dogs. Many organizations offer a meet-and-greet before finalizing an adoption to make sure the match is right for everyone.
