Meet Grandpa Douglas

Grandpa Douglas is an 8 year old hound mix with a gray muzzle and a smile he can't seem to turn off. Don't let the "Grandpa" fool you- he's bright, happy, and full of life. He loves car rides with his head out the window, a good long sniff through tall grass, and butt scratches above all else. He's very vocal about his gratitude and will happily tell you how he's feeling. He came off a euthanasia list at a rural Oklahoma shelter, where the staff fought hard to get this good old man placed before his time ran out. He made fast friends everywhere he went on his first day of freedom, including the crew at a Sonic drive-thru who sent him off with a bacon topped pup cup. Douglas is good with other dogs, friendly with strangers, and great with teens (he hasn't been tested with younger kids). He's crate trained and rides like a champ. This sugar faced senior has waited long enough for his happy ending. He's currently heartworm positive and in foster in Tulsa, OK. Once he's cleared of heartworms, he will be adoptable anywhere in the country. helplesshounds.com/adoption-application

Is Grandpa Douglas a senior dog?

Yes. Every dog listed on Lily's Second Chance, including Grandpa Douglas, is a senior — generally age 7 or older. Senior dogs are often already house-trained and calm, and they wait the longest for a home.

Can I foster Grandpa Douglas instead of adopting?

Some shelters and rescues offer a foster-to-adopt path — you foster first, then complete the adoption if the match feels right. Check Grandpa Douglas's profile for the organization's contact details and ask them directly whether a fostering option is available.

What should I expect in the first weeks after adopting Grandpa Douglas?

Senior dogs typically have a brief adjustment period of a few days to a couple of weeks as they settle into a new home. They may be quiet or shy at first, then relax once they feel safe. A calm routine, a comfortable place to sleep, and patience usually make the transition smooth. Most senior dogs settle in faster than puppies because they are already past the demanding early stage.

Is Grandpa Douglas good with children or other pets?

Compatibility depends on the individual dog's history and personality more than age or breed alone. Helpless Hounds Rescue can tell you about Grandpa Douglas's known behavior around children, cats, and other dogs. Many organizations offer a meet-and-greet before finalizing an adoption to make sure the match is right for everyone.
