Accessibility statement

Lily's Second Chance is committed to making this site usable by everyone, including people with disabilities.

Our goal

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA across the site. Accessibility is treated as a core quality concern, not an afterthought.

What we’ve done

  • Semantic HTML landmarks (main, nav, header, footer) on every page.
  • Descriptive alt text on all meaningful images; decorative images are hidden from assistive technology.
  • Keyboard-navigable menus, forms, and interactive controls throughout.
  • Sufficient colour contrast across text and interactive elements, following WCAG 1.4.3 AA minimums.
  • Focus indicators visible on all interactive elements.
  • ARIA labels and roles on custom controls (accordions, dialogs, status messages).
  • Skip-to-main-content link at the top of every page.
  • Automated accessibility checks run against every code change.

Known limitations

We are a small volunteer-run nonprofit. Despite our best efforts, some areas may not yet fully meet our target standard:

  • Third-party embedded content — Facebook Page widgets and external maps may not fully meet WCAG 2.1 AA. We link to the original source as a fallback.
  • Dog photo carousels — touch-swipe interactions on dog photo galleries may not be equally accessible by keyboard. Arrow-key navigation is available as an alternative.
  • Community submission forms — file-upload controls for memorial photos are functional by keyboard but may present limitations with some screen readers. We accept photo submissions by email as an alternative.

Technical approach

Lily's Second Chance is built with Next.js (server-rendered React), plain CSS, and standard HTML. Pages are fully rendered on the server before reaching your browser, so content is accessible even without JavaScript. Interactive enhancements are layered on top using progressive enhancement.

Tell us about an issue

Email us at [email protected], or use our contact form.

Please include a description of the barrier, the page URL, and the browser or assistive technology you were using. This helps us reproduce and fix the issue as quickly as possible.

Enforcement

If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the U.S. Department of Justice ADA National Network or a relevant disability rights authority in your jurisdiction.
