Meet Baru

Meet Baru, the adolescent Queensland Heeler and terrier mix. Baru is an endearing, soft pup who came to the Shelter after his previous guardian had an unplanned litter. Baru was an outdoor dog in his previous home. He wants to be with his people and a part of the family. Adopters should be patient as he transitions to indoor living in regards to potty training and leash walking. Baru will bond and learn with his new adopter through positive reinforcement based training. He has lived with other dogs, primarily those who he is related to. He seems curious about other dogs but undersocialized with new dogs. A home with another dog may be a fit after a meet ‘n greet at the Shelter. Adopters should prioritize decompression after adoption – bonding with Baru, learning about her and keeping things simple. As he gets comfortable, they can start to expand his world a bit bigger and see how he does. High traffic areas like dog beaches are not the best space for Baru at this time. Baru has lived with children as young as 11 years old and did well. He has chased cats in a previous home and would do best in a feline free home. Baru is available for pre-adoption. Come meet him, fall in love and take him home after his neuter surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
