Meet Xerxes

With a name like Xerxes, you might expect someone mighty and imposing. But when this 10-year-old pittie first arrived at the shelter, he was anything but. He was scared, shaking, and very shut down. For the first couple of weeks, Xerxes kept much of himself tucked away. Slowly, though, he has started to realize that he is safe. And the more he comes out of his shell, the more there is to love. Xerxes got a bath and brushing today and was an absolute champ. He allowed handling all over, stood nicely for everything, and seemed to enjoy the attention. He spent time with staff and volunteers and was friendly and comfortable with everyone. He also met some young children and was calm and gentle, taking treats like a perfect gentleman. And this older gentleman is fantastic on leash. He walks beautifully and is an easy companion to have at the other end of the leash. Dogs passing by? No reaction. Squirrels? Apparently not worth the trouble. Xerxes just keeps strolling along. At 10 years old, he comes with some of the bumps and bruises of a life already well lived and may need a little extra care along the way. But he has plenty of life and love left in him, and he’s showing everyone a little more of himself each day. The original Xerxes may have been a king, but this Xerxes isn’t asking for a kingdom. A comfy bed, good treats, leisurely walks, and someone who makes him feel safe and loved will do just fine. Come meet King Xerxes.
