About adopting a Beagle
The nose does not retire. A senior beagle still follows scent with the same focus it had as a youngster, which means the leash stays on and the trash can stays closed, but nearly all else about the breed mellows nicely with age. Older beagles tend to be merry, easygoing, and glad of company, whether that is people, other dogs, or a spot on the sofa between both.
These are pack dogs by history and they show it. Many older beagles are miserable alone for long stretches and much happier with a second dog or a person who works from home. They are food obsessed, which makes training easy and weight control hard. The famous beagle voice, a bay rather than a bark, usually persists, and neighbors may notice.
Weight, ears, and backs are the main care themes. Overweight beagles are commonly seen, and the extra load worsens arthritis and disc problems in the spine, so ask the shelter about the dog's weight history. The long ears trap moisture and can get infected. Thyroid problems and seizures are also worth asking about. Do senior beagles still howl?
Most do. A senior beagle keeps the baying voice and uses it when excited, when bored, or when it catches a scent. Some are quieter than others, and the shelter can tell you how vocal a particular dog has been in the kennel. If you live in an apartment with thin walls, ask specifically.
Are older beagles good with other dogs?
Usually very good. Beagles were bred to live and hunt in packs, and most senior beagles enjoy the company of other dogs and settle faster in a home that already has one. Cats and small pets are a different question, since the hunting instinct can persist. Ask the shelter what the dog has been observed with.
How much exercise does an older beagle need?
