Senior Shelter Dog With Scars All Over His Body Waits To Be Chosen
DogTime • June 23, 2026
A volunteer known on Instagram as @evelyn.garces._ recently shared a reel introducing Emerson, an older, 80-pound shelter dog covered in lumps, bumps and old scars. The clip, filmed at Lancaster Animal Care Center in Lancaster, California, highlights how Emerson has been repeatedly passed over by adopters despite his calm demeanor and obvious need for a loving home. The video follows Evelyn leading Emerson out of his kennel for a special outdoor visit. Viewers see him enjoying gentle neck scratches, wandering the grassy yard, offering his paw on cue, and settling down slowly and patiently. At the end of the day he returns to his kennel wearing a blue onesie, a small comfort at a facility that is currently over capacity. Evelyn notes how touched she was when Emerson let her hold him in her lap, and the reel shows how mellow and well-mannered he is. Emerson already knows basic commands such as sit, paw and down, and staff say he does well with other calm dogs — traits that make him a good candidate for a quiet, comfortable home for his senior years. Since the post went up it has drawn attention online, accumulating more than 1,200 likes and supportive comments praising his gentle nature and appearance. Despite the warm response, Emerson remains at the crowded shelter and is still waiting to be chosen. Anyone interested in giving Emerson a retirement home is asked to contact Lancaster Animal Care Center. His story is a reminder that older dogs often need more visibility and advocates to help them find the peaceful, loving homes they deserve.
