22-Year-Old Dog Was Returned To The Shelter After 15 Years With Her Family

Agatha arrived at a Texas animal shelter in 2011 as a stray when she was about 7 years old and was adopted soon after. For 15 years she lived with that family, but at age 22 — now blind and deaf — she was brought back to the shelter, reportedly surrendered simply because she was old. Maddie Cantrell, a volunteer and the person behind The Senior Dog Squad, encountered Agatha when she returned to the shelter. Cantrell was deeply moved by the elderly dog’s situation and worked with Houston-based Pippy’s Pals Rescue to keep Agatha out of a kennel and place her where she could be cared for in a home environment. Agatha, sometimes called Aggie, is now settled in Cantrell’s house alongside other senior rescue dogs. She’s eating well, finding a comfortable spot to rest, and is being slowly introduced to the household routine. Cantrell has committed to keeping Agatha for the remainder of her life so the dog will not face abandonment again. The case highlights a broader problem: senior animals are often surrendered when they become frail or near the end of life. Over the past three years, The Senior Dog Squad has taken in more than 20 older dogs as fosters, hospice cases or permanent additions to Cantrell’s family, providing end-of-life care and dignity. Cantrell hopes Agatha’s story will inspire others to become hospice fosters or volunteers. The rescue community needs more people willing to open their homes to seniors and hospice patients — dogs and cats of any age — to make sure aging pets receive compassionate care and a peaceful final chapter.
