November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month, and the Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office Animal Care and Control is raising awareness about the importance of adopting senior dogs. At 8 years old, dogs are considered seniors, and while many people prefer puppies, senior dogs offer unique benefits. According to MiChelle Pittman, assistant warden at the Grant Parish Detention Facility, senior dogs are often already trained, making them ideal for quieter households. They provide companionship and comfort without the need for constant activity. However, many senior dogs in shelters have experienced a decline in health and happiness due to living in shelter conditions. The shelter also cares for dogs with severe health issues nearing the end of their lives, supported by specialized volunteers and fosters. Adopting or fostering a senior dog is straightforward, with applications available online or at the shelter. The dogs will be featured at the Louisiana Pecan Festival on November 6, 7, and 8, and more events are planned throughout the month. Follow their Facebook page for updates. This initiative aligns with Lily’s Second Chance mission to help senior dogs find loving homes.
